⚓ Order These DecalsChoosing Your Boat Name Lettering
Your boat name is the first thing people see at the marina. Whether you are naming a new vessel, refreshing weathered lettering, or applying a name for the first time, the font and colour you choose tells a story before you even leave the dock.
Traditional Great Lakes fishing boats and working vessels favour block serif fonts — Cinzel and Playfair Display echo the lettering you still see on antique wooden boats in Port Dover, Collingwood, and Kingston. Modern fibreglass cruisers often go with Bebas Neue or Oswald for a clean, contemporary fleet look. Historic schooner-inspired names pair beautifully with UnifrakturMaguntia or IM Fell English.
For colour, maritime gold on a dark hull is the classic Great Lakes choice. Chrome silver reads well on white fibreglass. High-contrast white works on any dark hull and holds visibility from a distance — important when other vessels need to read your name in open water.
For federally registered vessels, your vessel name must also appear on the stern and both bows. A matching Pleasure Craft Licence number must be displayed separately on the bow in 75mm (3") or larger characters. We supply both.
What size should my boat name lettering be?
Most recreational boats use 3 to 6 inch letter height for the transom name. Larger yachts and commercial vessels often use 6 to 8 inch letters for visibility. The slider above lets you preview different sizes before you order. There is no minimum size requirement for a purely decorative boat name in Canada — only for federally registered vessel markings.
Do I need a hailing port on my boat?
A hailing port is required for federally registered vessels in Canada (Canada Shipping Act, 2001). For licensed pleasure craft (PCL), a hailing port is optional but traditional. Many Ontario boaters add their home port — Port Colborne, Kingston, Midland, or Toronto — as a regional identity and look.
What material are your boat name decals?
We print on 7-year outdoor cast vinyl rated for UV, saltwater, and marine environments. Every order ships with pre-applied transfer tape, a squeegee, and step-by-step application instructions. Most boat owners can apply their own decals in under 20 minutes on a clean, dry hull.
Can I order matching PCL numbers with my boat name?
Yes. Add your Pleasure Craft Licence number to the order notes at checkout and we will match the font and colour. PCL numbers must be at least 75mm tall and in a colour contrasting to the hull — we will confirm your specs before printing.
