Pleasure Craft Licence Numbers

Length-based equipment requirements — lifejackets, throwable PFD, sound signal, bailer, fire extinguisher, and navigation lights for different vessel classes.

What is the minimum height for boat licence numbers in Ontario?
Transport Canada requires Pleasure Craft Licence numbers to be at least 7.5 centimetres (3 inches) high, in block characters, displayed on both sides of the bow.
Do I need a Pleasure Craft Licence to launch at an Ontario boat ramp?
Yes. Any vessel powered by an engine of 10 horsepower (7.5 kW) or more requires a Pleasure Craft Licence. The licence number must be displayed on both sides of the bow.
What happens if my boat numbers are not contrasting with the hull?
Insufficient contrast between the number colour and the hull colour is a violation of the Small Vessel Regulations. A Transport Canada marine officer may issue a fine or detain the vessel.
Do personal watercraft (PWC/Jet Ski) need licence numbers?
Yes. If the PWC is powered by a motor of 10 horsepower or more, it requires a Pleasure Craft Licence and the numbers must be displayed on both sides of the hull.
Where exactly do Pleasure Craft Licence numbers go on a boat?
The numbers must be placed on the forward half of both sides of the hull (the bow area), above the waterline, where they are clearly visible from the water and from the air.
